Mas Espunya is some 200 hectares of forest above La Vall de Bianya, north of Olot, on the edge of the Garrotxa volcanic zone with the Pyrenees in view. The main house carries a carved date: 1636. Ten cabins now stand among its trees, most of them raised four to six metres off the ground. Each has a terrace, and most have a heated tub on it.

Breakfast and dinner are carried to the cabin, so nobody crosses the forest after dark. There is no wifi in the cabins and no television. Reception, a lounge with a fireplace and the restaurant are down in the old masia. Some guests arrive with a ring in their pocket. Most just come for two quiet nights.

Meet the hosts

Alex, who lived alone in the forest while the cabins went up

Alex López was 25, working in the treasury department of a Barcelona bank, when he was diagnosed with cancer in 2015. Once he recovered, he tried to book a treehouse night with Maria and found it full for a year. So he built his own, with Carlos and Alfonso, who owned Mas Espunya and came in as partners rather than sell. Before opening, he spent two months in a two-Michelin-star kitchen. He lost six kilos.

What you'll find

Ten cabins, no two alike

Pla del Grèvol is built around living trees that run up through the room. The Alpina cabins put the bed on a mezzanine under wide windows for the stars. El Cirerer was the first tourist Passivhaus in Catalonia. Pla del Faig swaps the tub for a heated pool.

Dinner at the door

The chef, Álex Pujol Puntí, spent twenty years in restaurant kitchens before coming here. He cooks the food of La Garrotxa from local, certified produce, with a little fusion at the edges. Breakfast and dinner both come to your cabin.

The volcanic Garrotxa

The estate is mostly forest, part of it protected as a bosc singular. Around it lies the volcanic Garrotxa: beech woods, small stone villages, the Pyrenees to the north. Spend the day out there. Come back for the tub.

Run on the sun

Seventy-eight solar panels on site. The cabins are insulated with recycled cotton and heated by pellet stoves, and the water comes from the estate's own well. Soaps are natural, single-use plastic is gone, and part of every booking goes to the cancer association in Girona.

Getting there

Finding Cabanyes Entre Valls.

Mas Espunya sits above La Vall de Bianya, about 10 km north of Olot. From Girona, take the C-66 and A-26 west to Olot, roughly an hour. From Barcelona, head north through Vic and the tunnels to Olot, roughly an hour and three quarters. You can park by the cabins. The team sends exact directions when you book.

Good to know

Before you book.

Drive to the estate and park by the cabins, which are reached by ramp or stairs. Without a car, take the bus to Olot and a taxi from there.

No wifi in the cabins and no television. There is internet in the lounge at the masia, next to reception.

Breakfast, made with local produce, is brought to your cabin. Dinner from the restaurant can be brought to the cabin too.

Several cabins sleep four, and Quintanic has a loft that suits children; a cot and highchair are available. Pets aren't allowed.
